Mohali, India - May 28, 2008
Match No. 56th Result. Kings XI Punjab v Rajasthan Royals
Shaun Marsh scored 115 of 69 balls with 11 fours and 7 sixes had helped Kings XI to clinch the final league match on the IPL T20 Indian Premier League.
Kings XI Punjab, riding on a sensational 115 from Shaun Marsh, scored just way too many runs for Rajasthan Royals to score as the Punjab team signed off the IPL league stage with a convincing victory. Chasing Mohali’s 221-3, which came after stand-in skipper Shane Watson opted to field first, Jaipur never got close to the asking rate, despite some lusty hitting from Niraj Patel, Yusuf Pathan and Kamran Akmal, and fell short by 41 runs.
It was just not Rajasthan Royals day. After Shane Warne decided to give rest to his key players Graeme Smith, Sohail Tanvir, Swapnil Asnodkar, and himself, his side had a bad start. Decided to open the inning with Kaif, stand-in skipper Watson made a blunder. The team lost him on just 1; he was clean bowled by Sreesanth in the second over. Irfan Pathan drew another blood in the fifth ball of the fifth over when he clean bowled Younis Khan (3) who was making his IPL debut.
Niraj Patel tried to reunite the lost energy and put up a brave front. In Watson's company he completed his maiden IPL fifty and a 49-run partnership. But the happiness did not last long. Piyush Chawla's googly clean bowled him in the 11th over. Watson (22) too departed in the 13th over off Chawla's bowling; Pathan took a simple catch on long-on.
Fiery Kamran Akmal smashed 24 runs in just 8 balls (3 sixes and a four) raising some hopes for the team. But that was also cut short by Chawla. Trying to loft a deilevry for six, Mota took his catch on extra cover. The score was 140/5 after 5 overs, still 82 short of a win in 30 balls.
Yusuf Pathan came to the rescue of Rajasthan Royals at this time. He smashed 3 fours and 3 sixes and made 39 in 15 balls. He was expected to lead the team to victory but as luck would have it, he fell prey to Hopes. Marsh pulled off a fine catch on square leg to seal his and probably Rajasthan Royals’ fate. Hopes ended his over with a caught & bowled dismissal of Salunkhe (6).
Royals needed 44 off the last over. An impossible target to achieve. The team finished with 180/7, only two runs coming from the last over.
The Kings XI Punjab made a mockery of Rajasthan Royals bowlers – a weak attack in the absence of Warne. The opening pair of Shaun Marsh and James Hopes added 133 runs in just 81 balls hitting 17 fours and 5 sixes. Marsh completed his sixth 50 of IPL in 27 balls including 8 fours 2 sixes. Hopes hit a superb 51 in 35 balls but was unfortunately caught by Salunkhe off Pathan’s bowling in the 14th over.
Marsh hit his highest score in the IPL- 115 in 69 balls- his maiden century with 11 fours and 7 sixes, is second behind Jayasuriya in maximum sixes race with 25 sixes, and is the leading batsman in run aggregate with 593 replacing Gautam Gambhir who is on 523.
Kings XI lost their two wickets in the last over. Trivedi caught Marsh at deep mid-wicket on Watson’s second ball. The last ball saw a run-out that took the wicket of skipper Yuvraj Singh. Singh found his form in Marsh’s company. He fell just one short of his half century; with the help of 6 sixes and 2 fours he smashed a quick fire 49 in 16 balls. In the end, Kings XI posted 221/3.
Shaun Marsh is the Man of the Match for his blistering century. He scored 115 off 69 balls with 11 fours and 7 sixes. He was aslo awarded DLF maximum sixes award too.
